Bazzania flaccida (bared whip moss) is a liverwort species from the Lepidoziaceae family and belongs to the group of leafed liverworts.

features

The small to medium-sized plants that grow in light to dark green lawns or individually are richly branched, flattened, rarely convex, 0.5 to 1 millimeter wide and up to 6 centimeters long. The tongue-shaped flank leaves are up to twice as long as they are wide and usually have two teeth of different sizes on the tip of the leaf, which is only slightly bent downwards and truncated at an angle. The anterior basal leaf margin is slightly curved and usually barely extends beyond the center of the stem. The leaves can easily fall off, especially on older parts of the trunk. The lower leaves are slightly wider than the stem and with entire margins to notched. As with other Bazzania species, whip-shaped flagella arise from the underside of the trunk. The lamina cells are about 20 to 25 µm in size in the middle of the leaf and usually have thicker corners and cell walls. There are 3 to 4 oil bodies per cell . The species is only known to be sterile.

Possibility of confusion

Bazzania flaccida can be confused with the similar Bazzania tricrenata . The two species were not differentiated until the last century and the delimitation is sometimes difficult, as both species can more or less similar in terms of characteristics. Bazzania flaccida is usually smaller and has narrower, sometimes slightly sloping leaves.

Location claims and distribution

Bazzania flaccida grows on moist to moderately dry, lime-free rock, on humus or, more rarely, on tree bark and rotten wood.

The species occurs in Europe and in western Asia. It is absent in the British Isles and Northern Europe. The occurrences are in the low mountain ranges and the lower to middle layers of the high mountains. In the Alps it rises to an altitude of 2300 meters.
