Eosipterus is a genus of short-tailed pterodactyloidea from the Lower Cretaceous China. This pterosaur was scientifically described for the first timein 1997 with the only species Eosipterus yangi , based on a fragmentary, skullless skeleton from the Yixian formation ( Jehol group ) in western Liaoning . It was the first fossil of a pterosaur to be discovered in this region. Another, more complete, but equally skullless skeleton was described in 2006.
The name Eosipterus means something like "wing of dawn" ( Greek eos - "dawn", "early and east"; pteryx - "wing") and is intended to indicate the place where this pterosaur was found in eastern China.
features
Eosipterus was a small short-tailed pterosaur with a wingspan of less than 1.25 meters. The ulna (ulna) was about the same length as the shin (tibia) and the second finger forming the wing. The upper arm bone (humerus) is slightly longer than the shin.
Systematics
Ji and Ji (1997) classified Eosipterus as a representative of the pterodactyloidea, which cannot be further assigned. A phylogenetic analysis of Lü and colleagues (2006) meanwhile comes to the conclusion that eosipterus in the Ctenochasmatidae is driven, a group within the pterodactyloidea.
Finds
The holotype specimen (specimen number GMV 2117) is an incomplete skeleton without skull and cervical vertebrae that was discovered in Beipiao . The second skeleton (copy number D 2514) is complete except for the skull and was discovered near the place Sihetun . Both skeletons come from the Lower Yixian Formation.
