Beaconsfield is a constituency of the British House of Commons in the southern county of Buckinghamshire . The area within the constituency includes the towns of Beaconsfield and Marlow , among others . He sends a representative to parliament.

history

The conservative and affluent constituency was mostly formed from the constituency of South Buckinghamshire for the 1974 election and slightly changed in its boundaries for the elections in 1983 , 1997 and 2010 .

Beaconsfield has been represented by members of the Conservative Party since its inception . First from Ronald Bell until his death in 1982, then from Tim Smith . In the by-election , which became necessary after Bell's death and was won by Smith on May 27, 1982, the Labor Party later Prime Minister Tony Blair unsuccessfully applied for the seat. He received only 10.4% of the vote and so behind Smith and Paul Tyler, Baron Tyler the candidate of the Liberal Party in third place out of a total of six candidates.

Dominic Grieve's constituency has been represented in the House of Commons since 1997 . He has been a non-party member in Parliament since the beginning of September 2019 , after he voted against the Conservative party line in the course of the United Kingdom's exit from the EU and his group membership was withdrawn.

In April 2013 the constituency had an unemployment rate of only 1.5%, which is significantly lower than the national average of 3.8%.

General election 2019

Grieve announced that he would run as an independent candidate in the 2019 general election and should be supported by the Liberal Democrats due to his EU-friendly stance . Rob Castell the Liberal Democratic candidate withdrew his own bid in favor of Grieve.

In the course of the election campaign for the 2019 general election , the possibility was discussed that Boris Johnson could move from his constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip to Beaconsfield in order to prevent Grieve's re-election and at the same time be able to run in a more conservative constituency. However, the Conservative Party put Joy Morrissey up as a candidate.

The election campaign received above-average media coverage. For example, prominent conservative politicians such as former Prime Minister John Major and Michael Heseltine , but also the actor and well-known Brexit critic Hugh Grant, spoke out in favor of Dominic Grieve. He clearly lost the election to Joy Morrissey.
