Beat Keller (librarian)

Beat Keller (born June 5, 1598 ; † April 2, 1663 ) was the librarian of the St. Gallen monastery from 1630 to 1633 .

Life

Father Beat, born as Melchior Karl Keller, was the son of Johann Nikolaus Keller from Schlettheim and Maria Jakoba Feldmann from Waldshut . His brother Adam was an officer in the imperial service, the third brother, Hartmann, died in exile in Rorschach . In 1610 Beat is attested as a student in the St. Gallen monastery, but had to leave the monastery a short time later due to the plague that was rampant at the time . In 1612 he returned to St. Gallen, where he made profession on August 10, 1614 . He then studied rhetoric and philosophy in Dillingen . In 1619 he became a subdeacon , in 1621 a deacon . He was ordained a priest on September 24th, 1624 and celebrated his first ceremony in Dillingen on October 23rd of the same year .

Act

In St. Gallen he was appointed confessor for the people. After brief activities in St. Johann and Wil, Father Beat finally became a monastery librarian in 1630. In 1633 he was called to teach in St. Johann and from January 6, 1635 he was governor in Rorschach . In 1636 he returned to the monastery of St. Gallen and appeared there as an assistant to the monastery archivist, Chrysostomus Stipplin , and as a sub-librarian. From 1640 to 1642 he was custodian, from 1642 to 1644 kitchen master . Beat Keller had a reputation for being a very regular monk.
