Ambros Negelin

Ambros Negelin (born November 19, 1594 - † August 24, 1658 ) was the librarian of the St. Gallen monastery in 1634 .

Life

Father Ambros (also Ambrosius), born Johann Kaspar Negelin, was the son of Wolfgang Negelin and Susanna Denzler from Rapperswil . Three brothers were also monks, Father Stephan in Rheinau , Father Michael in Einsiedeln and Father Peter in Fischingen . From 1611 he studied philosophy in Dillingen . On September 8, 1616, he made his profession in St. Gallen . He became a subdeacon in 1616 and a deacon in 1617. On December 22nd, 1618 he was ordained a priest, the primacy took place on January 6th, 1619.

Act

In the monastery of St. Gall had Father Ambros first as Vestiar , cellarer and Subcustos. In addition, he worked as a teacher in the convent school and spiritual of women's monasteries. From 1615 to 1620 he served as chapter secretary. In 1625 he was sent to Murbach Monastery , which he left again in the direction of Rorschach during the plague in 1629 . There he ruled as the economist of the monastic estates until he was removed from this office in 1632. From 1632 he is attested as a teacher again. He was a great book lover and was familiar with the Latin, Italian and French languages. On October 30, 1634 he was appointed governor in Wil , and on February 4, 1637 as governor in Homburg . Due to an illness he returned to St. Gallen in 1637. In 1639 he is first attested in Wil , then as a confessor in Notkersegg . During this time he also seems to have been responsible for the monastery library in St. Gallen. On October 4, 1640 he became subprior of St. Johann , then in 1642 pastor in Alt St. Johann . In 1649 he was the governor of Ehaben . After repeated requests he was recalled to his home monastery of St. Gallen in 1654, where he pin Dean was. In 1658 he resigned from his office due to illness and age. He died on August 24, 1658 at the age of 64.
