Life

Father Aegidius, born Gabriel Daniel Jonas von Buch, was the son of Johann Philipp Jonas von Buch and Helena Stauder von Winkelbach. He grew up at Waldegg Castle near Straubenzell , where his father was in the service of the prince. From 1607 he attended school in Rorschach , from 1611 that in the St. Gallen monastery . Returning home for a short time because of the plague , he became a novice in 1612 and made profession on August 10, 1615 . After further studies, he was in 1620 in Konstanz for Subdeacon , 1622 for a deacon ordained, and in 1623 a priest. Throughout his life he struggled with health problems and therefore kept going to bathing establishments.

Act

On October 23, 1623, Father Aegidius became the abbot's chaplain. In the same year he took over the offices of sub-cellar and sub-librarian. From 1624 he worked as a teacher in Rorschach . On October 8, 1626, he was sent to Fulda together with six other conventuals , where he first worked as a teacher and chaplain to the prince abbot, and later also as cathedral preacher. After a short transfer to Hersfeld , he worked again in Fulda as a teacher and registrar of the library until he was appointed novice master in 1630 . Because of the approaching Swedish troops under Gustav Adolf , he fled to Rorschach with his novices and confreres in autumn 1631 . From May 1632 he moved to St. Johann , from where he climbed two mountains (Stockberg and Speer). From 1633 he is attested again in the monastery of St. Gallen, first as confessor, festival and court preacher, then as catechist and teacher, from 1635 as head of the school and head of the monastery library . From 1640 he held other monastery offices, including that of cellar master, novice master and brother instructor. This was followed by monastic office activities in Rorschach and St. Johann. On April 10, 1646 he became pastor in Nesslau and Krummenau , but had to return to St. Gallen in July 1647 due to illness. In the following years he traveled regularly between St. Gallen and Alt St. Johann. He died on January 5, 1654 and was buried in the parish church of Alt St. Johann .
