Beate Naroska (* 1943 ; † February 17, 2008 ) was a German experimental physicist in the field of particle physics .

Live and act

Beate Naroska studied physics in Göttingen and Hamburg , where she completed her diploma. She also did her doctoral thesis in Hamburg in Martin Teucher's group on the subject of photogeneration of protons and atomic nuclei , with experimental work on bubble chambers at DESY .

From 1971 to 1978 she worked in Carlo Rubbia's group at CERN . The focus of her work there was in the area of proton-proton scattering and the development of wire chambers . In 1978 she returned to DESY and worked there on the experiment with the JADE particle detector at the PETRA storage ring . Her instrumental developments there enabled her to make precision measurements of the asymmetry of the muon pair formation, which enabled her to estimate the mass of the Z boson, which was not yet directly measured at the time . With the achievement of higher energies of up to 50 GeV at PETRA in the mid-1980s, the measurements were subsequently extended to the production of τ-leptons and b-quarks , allowed extensive confirmation of the electroweak theory and provided clear indications of the existence of the top quark .

After her habilitation on lepton physics at PETRA, Beate Naroska became a professor at the University of Hamburg in 1989. She continued to work at DESY and was one of the leading scientists in the H1 experiment at the HERA storage ring . In 2000 she spent a research stay at the HARP experiment at CERN , where she contributed to precision measurements of cross sections for particle formation in the context of neutrino rays.
