Beatrix of Castile (1242-1303)
Beatrix of Castile (* 1242 - October 27, 1303 ) was a princess of Castile and Queen of Portugal from 1253 to 1279 .
Beatrix was born in 1242 as the daughter of King Alfonso X, the sage of Castile and María Guillén de Guzmán. Since 1257 her father was also elected King of the Holy Roman Empire , her half-brother was King Sancho IV , the daredevil.
In 1253 she married King Alfonso III. of Portugal, who had just cast out his first wife, Mathilde von Dammartin . As a wife, but not as regent, she became the Portuguese queen in her own right.
She is not to be confused with Beatrix of Castile (1293-1359), a daughter of her half-brother Sancho, who, as the wife of Alfonso IV, was also Queen of Portugal from 1325 to 1357.
