Sinalco is a brand for various carbonated soft drinks and by its own account the oldest protected brand of non-alcoholic soft drinks in Europe. Today, with the exception of Switzerland , Sinalco is sold internationally by the Duisburg Hövelmann Group in around 50 countries. In Switzerland, Sinalco has been its own brand since the division of trademark rights in the mid-1990s and is now manufactured by Ramseier Suisse AG .

1902–1905: The beginning as "Bilz-Brause"

Sinalco AG share of more than 10,000 marks from March 22, 1923

In 1902, the Detmold merchant and beverage specialist Franz Hartmann developed a natural fruit drink from southern fruits and local fruits together with the well-known naturopath Friedrich Eduard Bilz in Oberlößnitz (now part of Radebeul ). Based on the basic idea that the mineral salts and fruit acids contained in the fruit are health-promoting and that the fructose transfers its energy directly to the blood, the first “ Bilz-Brause ”, the “Bilz-Limetta”, was created. In the same year, thanks to a large-scale advertising campaign, Bilz-Brause developed into the first international non-alcoholic beverage brand of European origin.

1905–1970: Introduction of the name Sinalco and worldwide success

Imitators quickly emerged, and in order to prevent this development, a competition was held in 1905 to find a handy and protectable brand name for the lemonade. This is how the name Sinalco (from Latin sine alcohole , without alcohol), which was protected in 1907, came about . As the company was one of the first beverage brands to export all over the world, including South America and the Middle East, Sinalco managed to advance to a global brand in the same year.

As early as 1903, Hartmann had an administration and production building built at Bahnhofstrasse 2 in Detmold based on a design by the architect A. Hanke. The production area extended to Sedanstrasse and was later continuously expanded. The neo-baroque buildings have been a listed building since 1987 .

Another milestone in the brand's history was laid in 1937: the distinctive Sinalco logo, the red dot with the diagonal lettering above a goblet outline, which was followed by the well-known shaped bottle for Sinalco in the 1950s.

Although the two world wars repeatedly forced production and export to stop due to a lack of raw materials and interrupted business relationships, the Sinalco brand was successful both nationally and internationally until the end of the 1970s: Sinalco was available in 150 countries around the world, and in West Germany Sinalco became the Part used as a generic name for lemonade .

1970–1994: death of the owners and constant changes of ownership

After the owner family died in 1970, Sinalco was taken over by the Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei , which also put the legendary 1979 jingle, “Die Sinalco schmeckt” , based on the flea waltz , into circulation. In 1981 the Sinalco trademark rights went to the Swiss Sibra Holding (later renamed Cardinal Holding). With the takeover of Cardinal by the Swiss Feldschlösschen Group, another change of ownership followed in 1991.

1994: New beginning under the Hövelmann Group

In 1994 Feldschlösschen first sold the German and in 1997 also the international trademark rights (except for those for Liechtenstein and Switzerland) to the German Hövelmann Group, which founded Deutsche Sinalco GmbH Markengetränke & Co. KG in Duisburg-Walsum and revitalized the traditional Sinalco brand . The trademark rights remaining with Feldschlösschen for Switzerland and Liechtenstein, however, went to the Swiss Pomdor AG in 2002, which merged with Granador AG to form Unidrink AG (renamed Ramseier Suisse AG in 2008).

At the same time, Sinalco Austria was founded in Austria in 1998 in Maria Alm near Salzburg , but its administration is also located in Duisburg-Walsum. The license rights in Austria have only been in effect since 2003, when REWE Austria subsequently took over the initial distribution. The private brewery Schnaitl began to place the brand in the catering trade again at the beginning of 2009.

In 2005 the company celebrated its 100th anniversary with many international guests at Drinktec in Munich . In Germany, the celebration was opened with a speech by the incumbent Chancellor Gerhard Schröder .

In 2009 the Hövelmann Group bottled 1.4 million hectoliters of lemonade.

Fachingen Heil- und Mineralbrunnen GmbH (Staatl. Fachingen) has been part of the German Sinalco since June 2011 .

In January 2014, the company management decided to strategically realign the catering business by awarding concessions. Vivaris Getränke GmbH & Co. KG from Haselünne , a subsidiary of the Berentzen Group, was presented as the first concessionaire . The concession has been running since 2015 and applies to the northern and eastern parts of Germany.

International business was also expanded again under the Hövelmann Group. Although the global success of the early 20th century could not be repeated, as Coca-Cola and Pepsi now dominate the market in many parts of the world, Sinalco is still popular in some parts of the world today, especially in former Yugoslavia and the Middle East East .
