The Schnaitl private brewery is a brewery in Gundertshausen in the Upper Austrian municipality of Eggelsberg ( Braunau am Inn district ) in the southern Innviertel , which has existed since 1842 . The brewery is located at the historically important crossroads between the Salzburg - Braunau and Burghausen - Mattighofen routes .
History
In 1841 the inn, which had existed since 1492, burned down. With the reconstruction of the inn, it was decided to build a brewery. Franz Schnaitl was the first master brewer and brewed his first beer in 1843. He learned the brewing trade from Kasper Moser in Henndorf and in the Augustinerbräu in Munich. As early as 1852, the young brewery was supplying 13 innkeepers. Under his son and successor Matthias, beer output could be doubled from 6,500 to 13,000 hectoliters between 1896 and 1910. In the 1930s the brewery went through a difficult economic time, the beer output sank to 5,000 hectoliters. It was not until 1956 that it rose again to 10,000 hectoliters. Under Ing.Matthias Schnaitl III., Who took over the brewery in 1959, various other breweries were taken over.
On May 4, 1945, US soldiers under the command of the Austro-American Ernst Florian Winter billeted themselves in the brewery. 63 years later, he visited the brewery again.
The brewery has already won gold medals at the Monde Selection several times. The brewery is still owned by the Schnaitl family today. Brewmaster is now Matthias Schnaitl IV.
