Bebo Sher (mostly in lower case as bebo sher ) was the brand name of a model series of razors in the GDR , which were manufactured in the millions at VEB Bergmann-Borsig from 1962 to 1991. Both “bebo” and “sher” are acronyms , “bebo” stands for Bergmann-Borsig, “sher” for “quick - gentle on the skin - electric - shaved”. Due to their high numbers, the razors in the series were an integral part of everyday culture in the GDR. Its design is regarded as a positive example of GDR design , although it was a contribution made by a heavy industry company to remedy the shortage of consumer goods in the GDR .

history

Sigmund Bergmann AG, later VEB Bergmann-Borsig, was a heavy industry company that produced turbines , generators and other components for power plants. In 1953 the Council of Ministers of the GDR passed a resolution by which large production companies were obliged to manufacture utensils (everyday items) in addition to their regular production program of capital goods. This program was intended to remedy the shortage economy in this area.

In this context, Bergmann-Borsig produced roller skates, ice skates and key rings during the first five-year plan from 1954. 1954 also began the development of a dry shaver; foreign models were procured and analyzed for this purpose. The razors were assembled by hand in a separate hall at the factory in Berlin-Wilhelmsruh . In 1956 the first razor was available on the GDR market. The first model was the type TR 011 with transformer and motor drive. The bebo sher was then Bergmann-Borsig's first oscillating armature razor, and the brand was registered in 1962.

In addition to Bergmann-Borsig's bebo sher , there were only two other electric dry shaver models in the GDR, both from the Suhl electrical appliance factory . The Sieger model series (including “Sieger” and “Sieger 3”) was manufactured in the Zella-Mehlis plant, before the Schmidt brothers were nationalized. The Komet model series (including "Komet TR 12") was assembled in the Suhl plant on Werner-Seelenbinder-Strasse. In 1983 Bergmann-Borsig also took over these two product lines and thus became the sole manufacturer of dry razors in the GDR. The term “monopolist” cannot be used in a planned economy .

In 1991, the electric shaver department at Bergmann-Borsig was closed. Some previously employed there went into business for themselves and continued to manufacture the Bebo Sher V with 20 employees at bebo sher Elektrogeräte GmbH . The redesign had already been designed by the designer Brigitte Pietsch in the 1980s and was exported to Eastern Europe. In 1997 production was finally stopped. In total, more than 8.5 million bebo-sher razors of the various model series had been manufactured before production was discontinued, 7.5 million of them by the end of 1989.
