ha-Bechira ha-Demokratit ( Hebrew הבחירה הדמוקרטית, German "The Democratic Election") is a small party in Israel .

The party emerged in 1999 when Roman Bronfman and Alexander Tzinker split off from Jisra'el be`Alija . The initially nameless group was first called Machar (German 'tomorrow'), an acronym for M ifleget Ch evra wa- R eformot (German “Party for Society and Reforms”), and a few months later it was called ha-Bechira ha-Demokratit. In the 2003 parliamentary elections , Bechira Demokratit ran on a joint list with Meretz and Jossi Beilins Schachar . The fifth place on the list was reserved for ha-Bechira ha-Demokratit. However, Tzinker separated from Bronfman and founded the Citizens and State party . The left-wing Meretz was criticized for joining forces with Bronfman, but nevertheless benefited from the alliance. The joint list received six seats in the 2003 election, so Bronfman moved back into the Knesset . Tzinker's separation of citizens and the state, however, clearly missed the required number of votes to enter the Knesset. Ha-Bechira ha-Demokratit was also able to move into some local parliaments. B. in Haifa . When Meretz and Schachar merged into a party in 2004, Bechira Demokratit remained independent, but the joint list was retained. Before the parliamentary elections in 2006 , there were talks about a change of numerous MPs disappointed by Schinui , who eventually founded the Chetz party . As a result, ha-Bechira ha-Demokratit did not run in 2006 or in the 2009 parliamentary elections .

The party was later disbanded before being revived by Jair Golan in the run-up to the 2020 election .

On January 7, the Bechira Demokratit agreed to contest the elections on a joint list with Meretz. On January 13, Meretz agreed to form a joint list ( Awoda-Gescher-Meretz ) with Awoda and Gesher , with Jair Golan joining Meretz.
