The Beck Isle Museum is the home museum of the city of Pickering in the United Kingdom in the English county of North Yorkshire is a museum accredited in the United Kingdom. The museum was founded in 1967 and presents the history of the city of Pickering in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Location and building

The museum is located on a terrace above the Beck river. This can become an island during floods. The terminus of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is nearby . The Grade II listed main building was originally planned as a trade school. Behind the main house, several outbuildings are lined up around an inner courtyard .

Exhibitions

In the main building, in which the museum entrance is also located, the rooms are set up as historical living rooms and shops. You will find a printing shop , a hairdresser , a pharmacy , a shoemaker , the taproom of a train station restaurant , an exhibition of musical instruments from the 18th and 19th centuries and rooms for special exhibitions. The museum also has a partially exhibited collection of pictures by the Pickeringer photographer Sydney Smith (1884–1958). Agricultural implements are on display in the courtyard. In the outbuildings surrounding the courtyard, there are craftsmen's workshops, agricultural tools and an extensive exhibition on former mining and the disappeared mining railways in the North York Moors .

Research projects, events and museum education

The museum conducts regular research on the history of Pickering. In 2017, for example, the topic was the returnees from the First World War . The museum and museum educational programs for school children. In the season from May to October, the museum holds a special event about twice a month.
