Alaíde Costa also performed in the bars of the Beco das Garrafas when she was an unknown young singer (photo from later years, 1998).

The Beco das Garrafas ( Portuguese for bottle alley , literally the alley of bottles ) is a few meters long dead end street in the Brazilian district of Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, a row of houses from the famous beach and Avenida Atlântica . It branches off between house numbers 21 and 37 in a south-westerly direction from Rua Duvivier, which runs to the north-west and is a one-way street . The alley is considered the birthplace of Bossa Nova .

She gained fame through the writer and journalist Dario Majhen in his 1990 book Chega de Saudade and later through Nelson Motta in the book Noites Tropicais ("Tropical Nights"), in which the author describes the development of the Música Popular Brasileira (MPB) and the represents the contemporary musicality of the bars of this historic site. In an interview for Fatos & Fotots magazine , in which she distanced herself from the artificiality of bossa nova, Nara Leão (1942–1989) revealed that the musicians had met in her and in the homes of many others to hear about the music to play, but that her apartment and that of her husband Carlos Diegues (* 1940) on Avenida Atlântica alone would not be the birthplace of Bossa Nova. The musicians first appeared in public in the Beco das Garrafas.

Before Beco das Garrafas established itself as a melting pot for music, this side street with the bars Ma Griffe , Bottles Bar , Baccarat and, at the very back, Little Club, was notorious for its prostitution . This changed from the early 1950s with the repeated engagement of young talent in the Little Club , which the others joined. There was a real competition among the bar owners to see who had invited the better talents in the evening. This change was accompanied by a professionalization that attracted new visitors. The restaurants weren't very big; A maximum of 60 people could be seated in it, but the performances could also be heard in front of the houses. The engagements were a win for everyone: The as yet unknown talents crowded around a gig, played for free and paid for their drinks. They could try everything there, prove themselves and gain experience. Professional musicians also played for free. Their appearances were recorded and published. Everything was fine with the mostly young audience.

Musicians such as Sergio Mendes , Raul de Souza , Luís Carlos Vinhas (1940–2001), Baden Powell de Aquino , Dom Um Romão , Airto Moreira , Wilson das Neves , Chico Batera (* 1943), Ronaldo Boscoli have performed in the bars of this street (1928–1994) and Luís Carlos Miele (1938–2015) as well as the singers Elis Regina , Sylvia Telles , Alaíde Costa , Leny Andrade , Wilson Simonal and many others. Most of them were still completely unknown here and only became famous later. The Beco das Garrafas, formerly also Beco das Garrafadas, is mentioned several times in the biographies of musicians, the author Marcello Cerqueiro specifically used the title Beco das Garrafas. Uma lembrança .

The name of the previously unnamed alley was coined by the chronicler and novelist Sérgio Porto (1923–1968) because of the habit of guests and bohemians in their bars to throw bottles. Other sources mention neighbors who missed the night's sleep who threw the bottles, or the musicians who were both practiced with their instruments and at emptying bottles. This street name was found in official documents as early as 1957. The area was mostly inhabited by white and wealthy middle-class Cariocas. In 2010 the district was redeveloped, losing its historical charm.
