Wilson das Neves (born June 14, 1936 in Rio de Janeiro , † August 26, 2017 in Ilha do Governador , Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian musician (singer, percussionist, songwriter) of the Música Popular Brasileira . He has not only released albums under his own name and with Os Ipanemas , but has also accompanied MPB stars such as Chico Buarque .

Live and act

Das Neves received music lessons from Joaquim Naegle and Darci Barbosa. He started his career as a musician at the age of 14. At the age of 21 he went on tour with the Orquestra de Permínio Gonçalves , around 1959 with the group of Ubirajara Silva. In 1962 he worked as a studio musician for the radio and then stayed at the Orquestra Sinfônica do Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro until 1964 .

1964 recorded the Neves with Os Ipanemas ; the album achieved cult status with its mix of bossa nova , samba , African rhythms and jazz . He then worked for various television stations and contributed to albums by Conjunto Ed Lincoln. In 1968 the Neves got the opportunity to record an album with Elza Soares , on which he was featured. His debut album Juventude 2000 followed. He also worked with Roberto Carlos , Chico Buarque, Eumir Deodato , Elizeth Cardoso , Clara Nunes , Elis Regina , Alcione and Beth Carvalho .

Other albums under his own name such as Som Quente É o Das Neves (1969), Samba-Tropi - Até aí Morreu Neves (1970) or O Som Sagrado de Wilson das Neves (1997) followed. In 2001 the group Os Ipanemas was revived and released several albums. He also worked with Sarah Vaughan , Toots Thielemans , Sy Oliver and Michel Legrand . He also created the music for the documentary Brasil Bam Bam Bam: The Story of Sonzeira .

Prizes and awards

With the 2010 album Pra Gente Fazer um Samba , he was nominated for the Prêmio da Música Brasileira 2011 as best singer and won the award for the best samba album. In 2014, the Prêmio da Música Brasileira won three awards for best singer (with Chico Buarque, Paulo Cesar Pinheiro and Cláudio Jorge).
