Bedřich Homola (1929)

Bedřich Homola (born June 2, 1887 in Běleč , today a district of Liteň ; † January 5, 1943 in Plötzensee prison ) was a Czechoslovak soldier, legionnaire , division general in the Czechoslovak army and, as a leading member of the Obrana národa resistance group, a personality of the Czechoslovak resistance 1939–1945 against National Socialism .

Life

Homola attended elementary school in Liteň , Hostomice and Bílina and then attended the middle industrial building school in Prague. He was drafted and attended a school for reserve officers during that time. After the outbreak of war, Homola was drafted and transferred to the Russian front . After two injuries, he enlisted in the Czechoslovak legions , took part in the Battle of Bachmatsch and became head of an officers' school.

After returning to Czechoslovakia in 1920, he worked at the Ministry of Defense as a trainer and attended 1921–1922 himself a course at the Vysoká škola válečná (War College) in Prague. As a result, he headed military academies as a lieutenant colonel and commanded regiments and brigades in Olomouc, Kroměříž and other cities. In February 1929 he was raised to the rank of brigadier general . From March 1934 he commanded the 1st Infantry Division in Prague and from October 1935 the 7th Army Corps in Turčianský Svätý Martin in Slovakia. After the separatist tendencies in Slovakia, aimed at the separation of this part of the country, became strong, Homola, following directives from the Prague government, declared a state of emergency in central Slovakia and disempowered the units of the paramilitary Hlinka Guard , whose leadership was arrested. After the independent Slovak state had been declared under the auspices of Germany on March 14, 1939, Homola returned to Prague.

After consultations with General Josef Bílý in August 1939, Homola worked on the creation of command and leadership structures for the resistance group Obrana národa, which was being established and consisted mainly of officers. The regional administration for Greater Prague was soon established (alongside the regional administration for Bohemia and Moravia), and Homola became its commander. After Josef Bílý, who was at the head of the main command of the Obrana národa, was arrested in November 1940, Homola moved up to his successor and took over the management of the general staff of the Obrana národa. In this position he campaigned for a restructuring and reorganization of the structures of the resistance and the cooperation of its forces.

As a result of treason, Homola was arrested by the Gestapo on December 31, 1941 . He was held in Pankrác Prison and subjected to several interrogations and torture. In September 1942 he was transferred to Dresden and shortly afterwards to the Plötzensee prison in Berlin. In the trial before the People's Court on September 30, 1942, Homola was sentenced to death for high treason. He was executed on January 5, 1943.

In 1946 Bedřich Homola was promoted to the rank of army general in memoriam. On October 28, 1998 he was awarded the Order of the White Lion in memoriam .
