Beetlejuice - An Extraordinary Spirit is the Canadian - US animated series adaptation of the Tim Burton film Beetlejuice from 1988. The series ran between 1989 and 1991 and consists of 94 episodes in four seasons.

action

Beetlejuice is not a villain in the series, but not a good man either. With his pranks and black humor, he often drives the whole no man's world insane. Still, he's a happy ghost who can't beat a tasty serving of cockroach chips. Lydia, who also struggles with school problems or her stepmother's crazy ideas, is also a must. In contrast to the film, Beetlejuice and Lydia are close friends here.

Adam and Barbara Maitland do not appear in the series, but new characters such as the French skeleton Jacques and the tap-dancing spider Ginger have been introduced. Beetlejuice shares a flat with the two of them and treats them rather negatively, although he basically likes them. A rather hapless prince named Vince also appears from time to time and even horror author Edgar Allan Poe has a brief appearance with his raven.

As in the film, Lydia brings Beetlejuice over by calling his name three times. Also known from the film is the desert area where Beetlejuice's only fear, the sandworms, live.

main characters

  • Beetlejuice: The spirit that has the most to offer. Beetlejuice, whose name is actually Betelgeuse , is cheeky, uncouth and loves to eat beetles. Although malicious is a compliment to him, he would never forgive himself for abandoning Lydia.
  • Lydia Deetz: Lydia is a goth with pale skin and black hair, who also likes scary things. Shunned by most people, she often turns to Beetlejuice, whom she calls by saying his name three times. Even if he often drives her crazy, the lotter spirit has grown dear to her.
  • Charles Deetz: Lydia's father wants nothing more than to relax. But this is practically impossible with a secret roommate like Beetlejuice.
  • Delia Deetz: Lydia's stepmother, who considers herself a great artist, which everyone else very much doubts. She always tries to make her stepdaughter a little more fun-loving. Nevertheless, she loves Lydia very much and tries to be a good second mother to her.
  • Jacques: Jacques is a French skeleton who lives with Beetlejuice in the “BJ Roadhouse”. He is very polite and tries to get along well with Beetlejuice. He's also very athletic.
  • Ginger: The spider is another roommate of Beetlejuice and the only crawling animal that Beetlejuice would never eat. She loves to quilt.
  • Monster Next Door: A hairy monster that lives in a Texas cattle skull. He wears cowboy boots and a hat that covers his eyes. It has to be annoyed about Beetlejuice all the time.
  • Beißer: The monster's dog and one of Beetlejuice's favorite victims.
  • Sandworm: Nothing hates or fears Beetlejuice more than sandworms. They live on Saturn and eat everything they can conquer. They are larger than a giraffe and lay eggs.

Film and series

Although the movie and the series have little to do with each other, there are some allusions to this in the series:

  • In the episode Baby Terror in Neverland , Beetlejuice and Lydia sing the Banana Boat Song ("Day-Oh"), which was a trademark of the film. In addition, this episode also shows the bridge on which the Maitlands suffered their accident in the film.
  • In the film, guests dance under the influence of the Maitlands at dinner. In The Dear Relatives , the Deetzes relatives do this through Beetlejuice.
  • In the episode mentioned above, Deliah's sister Zipporah wears the dress that Deliah wears while eating in the film.
