International Holocaust Remembrance Day
International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, was established by the United Nations in 2005 to commemorate the Holocaust and the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp .

The day, which refers to the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by the Red Army in 1945, was already commemorated in Great Britain and Germany before the UN proclamation ( Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism , since 1996) as commemoration day celebrated. Since 1951, Israel has been observing its own annual commemoration day , Yom HaSho'ah , on Nisan 27 of the Jewish calendar .
On October 18, 2002, the education ministers of the countries represented in the Council of Europe decided to establish a day of remembrance of the Holocaust and the prevention of crimes against humanity, leaving the member states to choose the day. January 27 was chosen by most states, including Germany and Switzerland . In connection with the commemoration day, crimes against humanity , genocide and especially the Holocaust should be discussed in school lessons, for which the Council of Europe provides teaching materials.
After the General Assembly of the United Nations had already commemorated the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps at its 28th special session on January 24, 2005 , it declared January 27th during its 42nd plenary session on November 1st, 2005 through its resolution 60/7 on International Holocaust Remembrance Day . It has been celebrated worldwide since 2006.

In Germany, on or around this day, the commemoration hour for the day of remembrance of the victims of National Socialism will take place in the German Bundestag .
In Austria , the platform “Set Signs Now! on this day since 2012, a commemorative rally at Vienna 's Heldenplatz , at which survivors of the Holocaust speak, as well as anti-fascist activists and politicians from the governing parties at federal and state level.
