Begonia eiromischa (English common name : Woolly-stalked Begonia ) is a most likely extinct species of plant from the genus of Begonia ( Begonia ). The first description by the English botanist Henry Nicholas Ridley was published in 1917.

features

Begonia eiromischa had a short and strong rhizome . The fleshy, sharpened leaves were obliquely shield-shaped and kidney-shaped. The smooth leaf surfaces were deep green. The length and width of the leaf blade were 7.6 to 8.9 centimeters. There were seven leaf veins . The thick, woody, thickly covered with a layer of red downy leaf stalks were 5.1 to 7.6 centimeters long. The smooth, red inflorescence axis was about 5 inches long. The approximately 1.27 cm large, rose-colored flowers were arranged on two branches. The two sepals were circular. The linear petals were very narrow. The three-part stylus formed two-part branches. The 1.5 centimeter long fruits had very short and at the back rather thin side wings.

Occurrence and habitat

Begonia eiromischa was endemic to Pulau Betong near the island of Penang , which belongs to the peninsula Malaysia . It grew on granite rock at a height of 170 m in the vicinity of dipterocarp forests.

die out

Begonia eiromischa is only known from two collections from the years 1886 and 1898. The habitat of this species has been completely destroyed by agricultural changes. Despite intensive searches in the 1980s, this plant species could no longer be detected. In 2007 it was therefore declared "extinct" by the IUCN .
