The authority desktop was a Debian- based, public Linux distribution of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), which was developed in cooperation with Credativ GmbH from Jülich. The idea was to offer public administrations inexpensive and secure software solutions.
Essentially, Debian GNU / Linux | Debian Sarge was expanded to include OpenOffice.org and KDE 3.3.2. Installation was greatly simplified, and automatic hardware detection replaced the manual editing of many configuration files.
Other desktop interfaces such as Gnome or Windowmaker were missing in order to make the distribution applicable for the easy setup of standardized PCs with graphical user interfaces , web browsers ( Firefox ) and OpenOffice.org office software.
The project was declared "out of date" by the BSI in 2008 and will no longer be continued.
Linux in public administration
There are many reasons why administrations use Linux . The main focus is on financial aspects, since no licenses have to be acquired, and security considerations. Here, the consideration that the frequently used Windows will only be supported by Microsoft for a limited time plays a role. If this period expires, security gaps will arise if new licenses for more recent versions are not purchased for a lot of money. The functionality of the software that is no longer supported is often still given within the framework of the respective requirements of the authorities, but the support is discontinued due to economic considerations. These reasons were one of the decisive factors behind the development of software that was adapted to the special needs of public administration bodies.
