Beijing Bytedance Technology Ltd. ( Chinese 北京 字節 跳動 科技 有限公司 / 北京 字节 跳动 科技 有限公司 , Pinyin Běijīng Zìjié Tiàodòng Kējì Yǒuxiàn Gōngsī , 字節 跳動 / 字节 跳动 for short ) or simply ByteDance is a Chinese Internet technology company that offers several machine-learning content Owns platforms and is based in Beijing . The company was founded by Zhang Yiming in 2012 and quickly rose to become one of the world's leading users of artificial intelligence . It has been active worldwide since 2015 and is best known in Western Europe through the TikTok video portal .
ByteDance's core product, Toutiao ( German headlines ), is a popular content platform in China. Toutiao started out as a news website and gradually evolved into a platform that serves content in a variety of formats including text, images, question-and-answer posts, microblogs and videos. Toutiao offers its users personalized information feeds based on machine learning algorithms. A content feed is updated based on what the device learns about a user's reading preferences.
ByteDance was also the developer of the TikTok mobile video sharing app. After the company acquired the start-up musical.ly , the company combined the two platforms into a single application under the name Tik Tok. Other applications that the company provides are BuzzVideo and Vigo Video .
ByteDance had over 800 million daily active users across all of its platforms as of November 2018. The company was valued at US $ 75 billion in November 2018 and is considered the most valuable “unicorn” ( start-up company ) in the world. 2018 invested Softbank founder Masayoshi Son 3 billion US dollars in the company.
In May 2019, the British newspaper Financial Times reported that ByteDance was working on its own smartphone .
In May 2020 ByteDance had a goodwill of US $ 100 billion.
