The charnel house (according to Dehio : Karner St. Michael ) is a listed building on the monastery grounds in Bad Doberan , a town in the Rostock district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . Besides the Karner in Paderborn , it is the only structure of its kind in northern Germany. It was included in the list of nationally significant monuments in 2002.

History and architecture

The ossuary , also known as the Chapel of the Dead or the Michaelis Chapel , was built around 1250 in the early Gothic style on the former cemetery north of the church. The bones of deceased monastery brothers, whose graves were re-occupied, were kept here. The eight-sided brick building stands on the northeast side of the church. The chapel stands above the leg cellar and is structured by the alternation of glazed and unglazed stone layers above the circumferential base profile. The round corner bars merge into a series of circumferential blind gables . The obtuse-arched windows appear slim. A dazzling rose is located above the door. Instead of an originally octagonal lantern , a tent roof was put on in 1984, based on the state of the 17th century .

In the interior there are wall and vault paintings that were carried out in 1879 by Karl Christian Andreae based on medieval remains. They depict Christ, the apostles, various saints, and the wise and foolish virgins .

In the lower level, the five foolish virgins are shown, mostly painted with reddish outlines on gray, all with sad gestures, sometimes with a hand on their bowed head. Next to it, redesigned in the 19th century, Gottschalk der Wende , Prince of the Obotrites . Above the figures there are episcopal consecration crosses , above the five wise virgins, sublime and beautiful, with round antique lamps from which a large flame strikes. A large jewel in a rhombic shape is emblazoned on the chest for wedding jewelry. On the sixth wall on the right there is a virgin with a sword in her hand, Saint Catherine. Figures kneel over the virgins, spreading their arms to worship or to support the consoles . Seven apostles (probably Matthew , Peter , Philip , John , Paul and Bartholomew ) and Jesus Christ can be seen in the vaulted ceiling . Above the door is Christ the Crucified, next to it, since the 19th century, allegorical representations of the church and synagogue as allegorical women.

From 2002 to 2010 the altar relief, the facade, the windows, the floor and the door were completely renovated.
