The Robert and Renée Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs (short Belfer Center ) is an institute for research, teaching and training in the areas of international security, diplomacy as well as in environmental and resource issues John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Cambridge, United States .
The Belfer Center was founded in 1973 by biochemist Paul M. Doty as a "Program for Science and International Affairs" within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University to provide serious analysis on nuclear hazards and arms control . Five years later, a Ford Foundation scholarship enabled the program to be resumed in the form of a permanent research center at the newly established John F. Kennedy School of Government called the Center for Science and International Affairs (CSIA) . In 1997, following the restructuring and renovation of the institute, the name was changed in honor of Robert A. Belfer to the Robert and Renée Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs (BCSIA) .
It defines its tasks in such a way that, on the one hand, it offers orientation bases with regard to political knowledge in the areas of international security, science and technology, environmental policy and in international affairs across departments, and on the other hand, it adequately prepares future generations of executives for their work in these areas.
