Lewis M. Branscomb

Lewis M. Branscomb (born August 17, 1926 in Asheville , North Carolina ) is an American physicist, science politician and industry manager.

Live and act

After his military service in the United States Naval Reserve in the Philippines in World War II , Branscomb graduated from Duke University with a bachelor's degree in physics . He then went to Harvard University , where he received his doctorate in 1949 with an experimental thesis on molecular physics . In 1951 he moved to the National Bureau of Standards (NBS). He also worked there in the field of molecular physics, especially for the application of the molecular beam method in the investigation of the structure and the spectra of atomic and molecular negative ions. Until 1972 he was increasingly active in managerial positions at the NBS. He was the first chairman of the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) in Boulder , Colorado , which was founded by the NSB and the University of Colorado . In 1969 he was the US president Richard Nixon Head (Director) appointed the NBS. He held this position until 1972. He joined IBM Corporation in 1972 as Senior Scientist and Vice President and later became a member of the IBM Corporate Management Board. From 1980 to 1984 he was elected chairman of the National Science Board. In addition to these functions, he served in a variety of bodies and agencies that worked on behalf of the US government, as well as on boards of several industrial companies until the 1990s.

In 1986 he went to the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he became Professor of Public Policy and Corporate Management. Until July 1996, he led the Science, Technology and Public Policy research program at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the John F. Kennedy School. He has published a large number of books and articles on science and technology policy and especially on risk research.

Branscomb has received many awards and honors. In 1969 he became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In 1970 he was accepted into the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society . In 1974 he became a member of the National Academy of Engineering . In 1979 he was President of the American Physical Society . In 2001 he received the Vannevar Bush Award . In 2003 he was elected a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences . He is a multiple honorary doctor.
