Belgrado is a Spanish post-punk and gothic-punk band.

history

Inspired by the music of essential representatives of post-punk and the ideology of early anarcho-punk bands, singer Patrycja Proniewska (Polish) founded the group Belgrado in 2010 with drummer Jonathan Sirit, guitarist Fernando Marquez and bassist Tete Marin. The musicians involved got to know each other in the squatter scene in Barcelona, in which they had all previously participated in different bands. Shortly after it was founded, the group began recording their self-titled debut. Belgrado appeared in 2011, like the following albums, in a cooperative self-publisher with the Spanish punk label La Vida Es Un Mus , and was distributed internationally through various independent labels . The debut was mainly noticed by fanzines and blogs of the punk and gothic scene and mostly judged positively.

After the release, the group began touring internationally early on. Since then, the group has mainly performed in self-governing autonomous centers . Belgrado performed in various European countries and the USA as early as 2012. Tours through South America in 2014, through Turkey and Greece, also in 2014, and through Japan and Australia in 2016 followed. The group also took part in various post-punk and punk festivals in France, Germany, Spain and America. In 2016 Belgrado headlined the third American San La Muerte Festival.

In the meantime, before the release of the second studio album Siglo XXI in 2013, Marin left the group and was replaced by Renzo Narvaez. The band, which is still closely associated with the squatting scene, also self-published the albums that followed their debut. All albums remain distributed by different independent labels . In the meantime, the group sells their own music as a download via Bandcamp, sometimes without a corresponding minimum fee. The international reception of the group has meanwhile increased. In 2016, with the release of the third studio album Obraz , they became the figurehead of the current Spanish post-punk scene.

style

Belgrado's style is borrowed from early Gothic rock , now occasionally known as Gothic Punk, and Post-Punk. Siouxsie and the Banshees , Killing Joke and Joy Division are often used as comparables . With regard to Proniewska's singing, Xmal Germany and Parálisis Permanente are also mentioned. The music is described as fast and melodic but still dark. The instrumentalists are referred to as a closed unit.

Playing the guitar is primarily simple, bright and fast-paced, but often has reverb and delay effects. The rhythm section is similar to that of Joy Division and Gang of Four . The bass leads the main melody over most of the pieces, while the drums simply and impulsively set the pace. According to reviewers, vocals and guitar form a cold contrast to the dub- influenced rhythm. In particular, the singing provided with reverb appears hypothermic and absent. The texts, which are mostly presented in Polish, are said to have a remote effect.
