Carlo Belgrado

Carlo Belgrado (born May 2, 1809 in Udine , † February 18, 1866 in Rome ) was an Italian bishop and Latin Patriarch of Antioch .

Life

As the son of Count Alfonso Belgrado, he belonged to a noble Friulian family. Carlo Belgrado received on 6 November 1831, the sacrament of Holy Orders . At the age of 34 he entered the service of the Curia and on August 12, 1843, he became the papal house prelate . Gregory XVI. appointed him on January 25, 1844 apostolic delegate in Benevento and on January 15, 1845 as a delegate in Perugia . On September 27, 1844 he became Apostolic Protonotary . Pope Pius IX appointed him cleric of the Apostolic Chamber on December 21, 1846 , extraordinary delegate in Fermo on July 8, 1847 and internuncio and apostolic delegate in The Hague on February 12, 1848 , this mission ended on November 1, 1855.

Carlo Belgrado had already been appointed Bishop of Ascoli on September 28, 1855 . He received his episcopal ordination on January 20, 1856 in the Roman church of Santa Maria in Vallicella by Cardinal Fabio Maria Asquini ; Co-consecrators were the Bishops Fidèle Sutter OFMCap , Vicar Apostolic of Tunis , and Giuseppe Cardoni , President of the Academy for the Ecclesiastical Nobility . On January 25, 1860, Carlo Belgrado renounced the bishopric of Ascoli and went back to Rome, where Pope Pius IX. on May 21, 1862 elevated him to the Latin Patriarch of Antioch and appointed him Consultor of the Congregation for Rites. On September 7th of the same year Carlo Belgrado became vicar of the Vatican Basilica and on February 22nd, 1865 canon of St. Peter.
