Course of the exposure

The Belich , also Balikh, Balich, Nahr Balīh, Nahr Belîkh, Arabic نهر البليخ, DMG Nahr al-Balīḫ ; is a tributary of the Euphrates .

The Belich runs east of the Euphrates and west of the Chabur . It has its source in Turkey and flows into the Euphrates near the Syrian city of ar-Raqqa . The small tributary has an average discharge rate of 6 cubic meters per second, with a maximum of 12 and a minimum of 5 cubic meters per second, and thus less than a tenth of the amount of water in the Chabur.

In the Belich Valley, in what is now Turkey, was the historic city of Harran , 30 km south of the Syrian border was Tell Sabi Abyad, and near ar-Raqqa at the mouth of the Euphrates, the ancient oriental settlement hill Tuttul . In its lower reaches, the Belich has created a valley about one kilometer wide, the bottom of which is 20 meters below the flat, undulating desert steppe. Shortly before the confluence, the valley widens to a width of four kilometers. The Belich used to flow downstream along the Euphrates until it emptied into the Euphrates several kilometers south of ar-Raqqa. Its river bed is now artificially shortened and leads directly to the Euphrates.
