Belontia is a two species comprehensive genus of the labyrinth fish (Anabantoidei). The honeycomb macropod ( Belontia hasselti ) lives in Southeast Asia , the Ceylon macropod ( Belontia signata ) in Sri Lanka . The generic name is derived from "Belontja", the local name for the honeycomb macropod in Palembang .
features
Belontia species have a moderately elongated, laterally flattened body and become 15 to 20 cm long. Females stay a bit smaller in both species and have a more compact body shape. The dorsal fin is supported by 16 to 20 hard and 9 to 13 soft rays of the unpaired fins. In the anal fin there are 13 to 17 hard and 10 to 13 soft rays, in the pelvic fins there are one hard and five soft rays. The pectoral and caudal fins are without hard rays, 11 to 13 fin rays are in the pectoral fins, 16 to 18 are counted in the caudal fin. The dorsal and anal fins are approximately the same length and are almost symmetrically opposite each other. Both fins are pointed, longer in the males than in the females. The caudal fin is rounded. The number of Branchiostegal rays is six.
