history

Coat of arms and year on the tower

The Nenndorfer fountain director Freiherr von Hanstein-Knorr had the observation tower built between 1850 and 1852 at his own expense on the north-western elevation of the Deister, the Strutzberg. A number of wealthy spa guests support the construction. Hanstein-Knorr's family coat of arms with the year 1852 is attached to the outer wall of the octagonal stone tower. The schaumburg chamberlain probably served as inspiration for the Idaturm in Harrl and Wilhelmsturm in the Rehburg mountains, built in 1847 in the neighboring Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe .

The Belvedereturm (Italian bel vedere "beautiful view") called the observation tower, as a landmark that was visible from afar, played a role in the national survey and served as a destination for the Nenndorf spa guests and the residents of the surrounding areas. A network of hiking trails in the Deister was created in the vicinity of the tower. The European long-distance hiking trail E1 leads past the Belvedereturm .

Due to poor maintenance, damage in the Second World War and vandalism in the years that followed, the tower visibly fell into disrepair. The stairs inside had collapsed, stones broken out.

With funds from the state of Lower Saxony, the municipality of Bad Nenndorf and the district of Schaumburg , the tower was repaired in 1987 and an additional steel structure was added. For a number of years this enabled a distant view from the 130-step tower. Around 2017 the view was limited by the tall trees surrounding the tower on all sides. In the meantime (09/2019) the disturbing trees are no longer available, either due to wind breakage or felling due to bark beetle infestation .

Immediately by the tower there was initially an open shelter. Since 1909 there was a restaurant called Cecilienhöhe on the Deister edge between Nenndorf and the Belvedereturm.
