Bely in the north of the Yamalsky Rajons (yellow) |
Bely ( Russian Бе́лый о́стров / Bely ostrow , "White Island" ) is an island in the Kara Sea north of the Yamal Peninsula in northwest Siberia ( Russia ).
The area of the island is about 1900 km², the east-west and north-south expansion each about 50 kilometers. It is separated from the mainland, the Jamal Peninsula, by the Malygin Strait, which is around 8 km wide at its narrowest point . The coast is mostly poorly structured, only in the southwest ( Pacha Bay ) and east ( Njabipacha Bay ) do isolated bays cut deep. There are several small islands in front of Bely, especially in the east and south-east; the largest is Besymjanny ( "The Nameless One " ) in Njabipacha Bay. The surface of the island is a plain sloping slightly to the south; their maximum height above sea level is only 12 meters. The island is covered with tundra and heavily marshy . There are countless small lakes and streams. Thermokarst symptoms are common.
Administratively, the island belongs to the Yamalski Rajon in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug . There are no permanently inhabited places. A weather station , the Popow Station , has been located on the west coast since 1933 . Since the northeast passage leads past the island, a number of navigation signs were set up, such as automatic beacons on the north ( Cape Bely ) and southeastern ( Cape Schubert ) points of the island as well as radio beacons .
