The Bemberg is an elevation in the north-west of Hemers . It is located in the southwest of the Menden hill country near the Hemerhardt settlement . The name originated from the term been or benne (meadow) and indicates the earlier vegetation of the area. Today a large part of the Bembergs is forested.
Burial mound
The remains of the only two barrows that have been discovered in the Sauerland so far are located on the Bemberg . They were probably made in the Bronze Age between 1550 and 1250 BC. A forest owner found the remains of a human skeleton in 1912 and thus initiated excavations that were completed a year later. One grave is 1.3 meters high and nine meters in diameter. The second grave was about the same size, but was much more splendidly decorated. Bronze jewelry, which has since been lost, was found on both arms of the corpse.
Further use
The State Institute for Ecology, Land Management and Forests in North Rhine-Westphalia classifies the forest area on the Bemberg as one of the twelve recreational areas in Hemer. The area is accessible via several hiking trails.
The planned route for the further construction of the federal motorway 46 between Hemer and Neheim leads over the Bemberg. For nature and noise protection reasons, a 300 meter long tunnel is planned for this area .
