Ben-Zion Chalfon ( Hebrew בן-ציון חלפון; * 1930 in Tripoli ; † September 21, 1977 ) was an Israeli politician who was Deputy Minister of Agriculture from December 22, 1969 to March 10, 1974 as a deputy to the Ma'arach .

Life

Chalfon was a member of the Zionist youth movement in Libya as a child . In 1947 he immigrated to Palestine on the ship Medinat HeYehudit as part of the Alija Bet . Nevertheless, he was arrested by the British and taken to an internment camp in Cyprus . The following year he reached Israel, he was a member of the Jiftach Brigade ( Hebrew חטיבת יפתח) of Palmach , with whom he fought in the Israeli War of Independence in 1948.

He helped other Jews emigrate, and in 1949 he was one of the founders of Chazaw ( Hebrew חָצָב), a city between Gedera and Be'er Sheva .

In the 1969 elections he was elected to the Knesset as a member of the Ma'arach . He was appointed Deputy Minister of Agriculture on December 22, 1969 . He was re-elected in the 1973 elections, but lost his office. In the 1977 elections, he also lost his seat in the Knesset. He was killed in an accident near Gedera.

In 2006, the Archaeological Museum was opened in the desert city of Nitzana ( Hebrew נִצָּנָה, ניצנה) in the western Negev desert near the Nabatean city ​​of Tel Nitzana , on the border with Sinai, named after him.
