The Association Education for Sustainable Development Munich eV , or BenE Munich for short , is a regional competence center for the promotion of education for sustainable development (RCE - Regional Center of Expertise) and network in the field of education for sustainable development in Munich. BenE Munich was founded as an association in 2007 and is recognized by the United Nations University as an RCE .

history

In 2002 the United Nations in Johannesburg declared the ten years from 2005 to 2014 the "World Decade of Education for Sustainable Development". All actors in the field of sustainability were asked to participate. Since then, the idea of education for sustainable development has spread more and more in the various areas of education. The German UNESCO Commission has compiled an overview of materials and awarded many projects. At the same time, this was the reason for the establishment of BenE Munich.

education for Sustainable Development

Education for sustainable development is, on the one hand, about informing people about the impending dangers and pointing out options for action (e.g. environmentally conscious behavior, buying fair trade products, social commitment). But people should also be empowered to commit themselves to sustainable development in their everyday life and work. This means that they should evaluate their decisions according to whether they are “sustainable” or not. In addition, Education for Sustainable Development aims to impart key skills. These include B. the ability to understand complex interrelationships, to think and plan with foresight, to motivate oneself and others, to bring different interests together and to find common solutions. The coordination of the activities in Munich in this special area took over when the association BenE Munich was founded.

society

Thanks to the BenE association, Munich received the award as a fair trade city in 2013 . On the picture, Mayor Christian Ude reads on the occasion of the award ceremony at the Tollwood Festival.

With the local " Agenda 21 " there were already structures in Munich that could be linked to. This gave rise to the desire among those involved in Agenda 21 to create a platform for exchanging ideas on education for sustainable development. In July 2007, 35 companies, institutions and individuals founded the association " Education for Sustainable Development Munich eV ", or BenE Munich for short. The current 70 members, 50 of which are institutions, come from the following areas:

  • the city of Munich
  • of science and university
  • the economy
  • of environmental education
  • of one world organizations and
  • from the field of social associations

The representatives work in educational institutions (e.g. schools and extracurricular youth education, adult education, universities) or in institutions that contribute to general opinion-forming (e.g. media, culture). The aim is to promote the exchange of knowledge among the actors and through the many educational offers on sustainable development. As a result, this broad foundation can be considerably strengthened in its effectiveness with limited resources so that a culture of sustainability can be established in Munich.

Competence center

In addition to UNESCO, the International Society of Universities , the Society of University Directors for a Sustainable Future and the COPERNICUS program of the Association of European Universities called for the establishment of Regional Centers of Excellence in Lüneburg in October 2001 . This requirement was taken up in the Ubuntu Declaration at the World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002 in Johannesburg.

The United Nations University, as the United Nations organ, is responsible for coordinating the RCEs. It was founded in 1973 with the aim of researching future questions for humanity in all areas of life on a scientific basis. The rector of the University of the United Nations Hans van Ginkel started the RCE program in 2005 with seven RCEs, since then it has been coordinated by the RCE Service Center at the Institute of Advanced Studies of the UNU. On February 12, 2007, BenE Munich was officially accredited by the United Nations as the 13th "Regional Center of Expertise" of the UN Decade of "Education for Sustainable Development". The alliance is thus one of 117 competence centers worldwide.

Activities of the BenE Munich competence center

The regional competence center and its members are committed to:

  • the qualification of multipliers,
  • the implementation, optimization and further development of ESD offers,
  • the initiation, networking and dissemination of high-quality new educational projects,
  • public relations work for corresponding educational offers.

The association wants to be a mouthpiece for the change in the city towards a culture of sustainability. At the instigation of BenE Munich, the National Committee on Education for Sustainable Development of the City of Munich awarded the "City of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development" on June 5, 2012.

Projects

The association is present with various projects or is active in various local projects.

GenE

In this project, aspects of systematic thinking and other design skills for sustainable development are conveyed to young people and adults. GenE offers event formats for different target groups and topics, starting with simulation games for young people, through offers for students to further training for specialists in didactics, pedagogy, (sustainability) communication and education management.

Sustainable business

As part of this project, educational concepts are being developed that deal with the responsibility of the economy and the path towards an ecological-social market economy. Two strands are pursued: As part of the sub-project "Sustainable Business Learning (NWL)", competencies for sustainable business practices can be acquired at the upper level in the context of practical seminars. The educational program "Continuing Education Sustainable Management (WNW)" is offered by Munich University of Applied Sciences and BenE Munich. Here, people can receive further training in the fields of business ethics, corporate responsibility management, environmental, human resource and change management and systemic thinking.

Climate autumn

The series of events of the " Munich Climate Autumn " also goes back to the activities of BenE . During these event weeks, a variety of events will take place around the respective annual theme of the UN Decade. BenE Munich and many of its members take part in it with their own educational offers and a variety of collaborations.

Summer Symposium

With a summer symposium that takes place every two years, the association intends to develop the dimensions and criteria of a culture of sustainability in a dialogue between science, art and education and to convey them to a broad public in a practice-oriented manner. One or more of the association's networks are responsible for the conception and implementation of the respective events on the various focal points.

Lecture series of the Munich universities

The lecture series organized by BenE Munich in cooperation with the Association for Sustainability and the Rachel Carson Center at the Munich University of Applied Sciences aims to build a bridge between the academic world and business, politics, culture and civil society. The lectures with experts combine different facets of sustainability. Afterwards, individual questions are deepened in informal discussions and the local sustainability network is strengthened.
