The Tollwood Festival is a festival in Munich that takes place every six months in the Olympiapark (summer) or on the Theresienwiese (winter).

history

The first festival took place in the summer of 1988 in Olympiapark Süd. Local artists such as Konstantin Wecker and the Biermösl Blosn performed at the first festival from July 1 to 11, 1988 . It was not until 1991 that international interpreters began to appear.

In addition to the summer festival, there has also been a winter festival since 1991, which has been held on Theresienwiese since 2000 after a few changes of location . In 1999 the winter festival at the Arnulfstraße location was badly affected by the winter storm at the end of December 1999 .

Because of the attack in Munich in 2016 , the Tollwood Summer Festival was canceled and evacuated in the evening for security reasons and ended two days earlier than planned for reasons of piety.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the 2020 Tollwood Summer Festival has been canceled.

The festival is characterized by a three-pillar model: market of ideas, organically certified festival gastronomy and a cultural program consisting of music, various forms of theater, performances and visual arts. Since 1988, each festival has focused on different topics. The aim of the organizers is to combine a cultural offer of music, theater, cabaret and art with ecological awareness. Most of the cultural events take place free of charge.

The festival sees itself as a forum for ecology and environmental awareness. On the one hand, it aims to serve as a platform for important issues in this area and, on the other hand, as a source of inspiration for ecological projects. Associated with this are the organic certification of festival gastronomy since winter 2003 and the “Bio for Children” campaign, which was launched in 2006 together with the Department for Health and Environment of the City of Munich, and which give children in schools and public care facilities the sustainable Food handling and a healthy diet should be brought closer.

Together with the German Animal Welfare Association , Tollwood is working to end industrial factory farming .

The summer festival extends over about 25 days in June and July. It takes place in the Olympiapark Süd with around 50 catering and over 200 handicraft stands. For reasons of noise protection , the live music events usually end at 10 p.m., and the disco in the tents is then operated via limiters .

The winter festival

In addition to the summer festival, there has also been a winter tollwood since 1991. The Winter-Tollwood has been taking place on Theresienwiese since 2000, after moving from the site of the former container station on Arnulfstrasse . It starts just before the first Sunday in Advent and has its own Christmas market that lasts until December 23rd. The cultural events take place up to and including the New Year. The program consists of theater, the “market of ideas” and the world salon.
