Ben Emmerson
Ben Emmerson QS , (born August 30, 1963 in Kent ) is a British attorney with the status of Crown Attorney . He is a specialist in international law , international criminal law and human rights .
Emmerson has represented individuals in international courts and tribunals such as the International Court of Justice , the European Court of Justice , the European Court of Human Rights , the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice for the former Yugoslavia for 25 years .
From 2011 to 2017 he was the UN Special Rapporteur on Counter Terrorism . From 2014 to 2016 he was Council of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse . The reason for his resignation was a sexual assault charge, of which he was acquitted by an independent committee of inquiry under Sir David Calvert-Smith. In March 2014, Emmerson published a report on drone strikes by the United States.
Emmerson is Visiting Professor at Oxford International Law and Security and he is an Honorary Fellow at Mansfield College, Oxford. He lives in London and has four children.
Publications
Emmerson is co-founder of the journal European Human Rights Review edited by Jonathan Cooper OBE , which has been published by Sweet & Maxwell in London since 1995. He occasionally writes guest commentary for the British Guardian .
