Ben Tangaval ( Gaelic : Beinn Tangabhal ) is a hill on the Scottish Hebridean island of Barra . It is the second highest point on the island after the 383 m high Heaval . The 332 m high elevation is located about 2.5 kilometers northwest of Castlebay , the capital of the island, which is also the closest larger settlement. The third highest point on Barra is the 206 m high Ben Cliad . The mound consists essentially of gneiss .
While Ben means mountain, the name part Tangaval is derived from the nearby settlement of the same name. Originally the name comes from the Nordic name Tanga-stödhull , which roughly means milking place near the cape . Extensive archaeological excavations have been carried out on the slopes of Ben Tangaval and on the Tangaval Peninsula, including the remains of a heel-shaped cairn and settlements from the Neolithic . Settlement of the slopes of Ben Tanagaval has been proven for about 6000 years.
Various routes are described for hikes on the Ben Tangaval.
