Benburb Castle

Benburb Castle (also Wingfield's Castle , Irish Caisleán na Binne Boirbe ) is a castle in the village of Benburb in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland . It is a Bawn ( donjon with curtain wall ) that Sir Richard Wingfield had built in 1611. It is an unequal square with an entrance on the north side. In the northeast and northwest corners there are large, rectangular flanking towers and a smaller, round tower in the southeast corner. The castle was built on a limestone cliff above the Munster Blackwaterbuilt on the border between Counties Tyrone and Armagh . A 19th century house can be found in the southwest corner of the Bawn. The castle, which is on the site of a Servite priory , was recently restored and is therefore in excellent condition.

Benburb Castle is a State Care Historic Monument in Town Country of Benburgh in District Mid Ulster .
