Bencatel is a town and municipality in the Alentejo , in southern Portugal .

history

The place name comes from Roman times and goes back to ben catel , whose meaning is traced back to "son of the matador". The Romans were already mining marble here, especially at what is now the Pedreira do Monte Del-Rei quarry .

In the 17th century the place was known after its patron saint Santa Anna or Santa Ana and was an insignificant agricultural place in the district of Vila Viçosa. The Church of Santa Ana still existed in 1758, but the population in Bencatel increased and in Santa Ana continued to decrease. In 1763 the new church was built in Bencatel and the community center was relocated there. Nothing remains of the original church today. a. built into the new church in Bencatel, which the patron saint took over.
