Benders Marie is a traditional Düsseldorf restaurant in the old town , which originated in the 17th century. The restaurant is a meeting point for various traditional associations and is known nationwide for its mussel dishes. There is a small hotel on the upper floors.

location

Benders Marie is located at Andreasstrasse 13. Andreasstrasse, named after the Hofkirche St. Andreas , is a quiet alley that is only 120 m long and, in extension with the Kurz Strasse and the Mutter-Ey- Strasse, the east-west connection between the Burgplatz and the opera on Heinrich-Heine-Allee . Next to the Benders Marie there is a passage to the Neander Church . There are two more traditional restaurants on the street: the Tante Anna wine house and the Csikós .

history

In 1662 the house "In der gute Frau" was first mentioned in a document. In 1803 the landlord Johann Hofmann ran a wine tavern there. In 1806, Johann Eisenbarth announced in the Bergische Wochenlichen Nachrichten that he had "moved into the good woman" and was offering food and "the best types of wine" there. Eisenbarth moved to Burgplatz in 1812 . Two more hosts followed. Wilhelm and Marie Bender had been running the restaurant since 1879. The popular landlady soon gave its name. On the Düsseldorfer Platters it became “Benders Marie”, whose portrait adorned the entrance. The house was hit by a bomb in 1943 and rebuilt in 1949. After the war, the daughter continued the business. The picture of “Et Benders Marie” hangs in the bar today. In the 1950s, the old town original Marianne Plum began her career as a singer and accordion player at Benders Marie. A memorial plaque made of granite, which was placed on the right side of the building, commemorates the singer who died in 2009.

building

The original building from the 17th century was largely destroyed in the bombing of the old town on June 12, 1943 and rebuilt in 1949. The original cellar vaults are still preserved. In 2004 the building was increased by three storeys and completely renovated. The three-star Hotel St. Andreas, which belongs to the economy, is located on the upper floors.

Others

Around 1800, the notary Müller, known as the Düsseldorf Original, lived above the restaurant. In 1891 the Düsseldorf city music director Carl Hütten was born in the house. Hütten, who was also the composer of the Jonges song, celebrated his 65th birthday with numerous guests from the local celebrities in the Benders Marie.
