Benedetto Ferrari (* 1603 in Reggio nell'Emilia ; † October 22, 1681 in Modena ) was an Italian theorbist , conductor and composer.

Life

Benedetto Ferrari received his training in Rome , where he was nicknamed "Benedetto della tiorba" because of his virtuoso theorbian playing. After a few years in Parma , he moved to Venice in 1623 . He ran the San Cassiano Opera House there with Francesco Manelli , the first public and commercially operated opera house. He wrote both libretti and operas . Ferrari's Andromeda to the music of Francesco Manelli was premiered in San Cassiano in 1637. Two more operas followed in San Cassiano, also with music by Manelli, La maga fulminata (1638) and Il pastor regio (1640).

From 1645 until his death he worked in Modena as court conductor and theorbist, with a few longer interruptions (among other things he stayed in Vienna from 1651 to 1653).

He knew how to combine folkness and musical quality in his compositions. Some of his operas, solo cantatas and his Oratorio italiano - a popular form of the oratorio - "Il Sansone" (libretto: Giovanni Battista Giardini) have come down to us.
