resume

Benedict Calvert was a member of the Calvert family, which was very influential in Maryland. Maryland Colony was then owned by this family. Several family members were governors of the English and British colony in the 17th and 18th centuries. He was a younger son of Benedict Calvert, 4th Baron Baltimore (1679-1715) and brother of Charles Calvert, 5th Baron Baltimore (1699-1751). He grew up in England while his family temporarily lost power in the Province of Maryland as a result of the Glorious Revolution of 1688. As was customary with nobles at that time, Benedict Calvert also made a so-called Grand Tour in the years 1724-25 , which took him to Italy. At that time he was studying Italian architecture and collecting art treasures, which he brought to the family estate in Surrey (England).

In the meantime, his family had regained control of the British colony of Maryland. From 1720, Charles Calvert (1688-1734), an illegitimate family member, served there as governor. In 1727 this was replaced by Benedict Calvert. The decision was made by Benedict's older brother and owner of the colony Charles (1699–1751). Benedict held this office until 1731. Then he was replaced by Samuel Ogle . If you believe his description, Benedict Calvert's government work was bad. After his recall, he sailed back to England on board a family ship. However, he was now sick with tuberculosis and died during the crossing. His remains were then buried at sea. Since he was childless, he had bequeathed his younger brother Cecilius Calvert (1702–1765) his property and his fortune of about 10,000 pounds.
