Benedikt Venusi (born February 2, 1751 in monastery grave ; † January 13, 1823 in Osek ) was abbot of Osek monastery.

Life

Venusi attended the Jesuit college in Mariaschein in the Leitmeritz district in Bohemia and studied theology in Prague. He was the organist both in Mariaschein and at the St. Wenceslas Seminary in Prague. In November 1771 he entered the Osek Monastery, took religious vows in 1775 and became a priest in April 1779. On October 24, 1798 he was elected abbot, as he served for almost a quarter of a century.

In his earlier years he had proven himself to be a talented musician who played the organ and violin with mastery and composed pieces for both instruments. In his old age he studied theology of the Pentateuch , which he translated and a Hebrew-German-Latin dictionary entitled: "Holy History", 1st and 2nd volume (Prague 1820 and 1821, gr. 4 ° .) published in print. In 1811 he took over the Komotau grammar school and filled it with clergymen. He died in 1823, 72 years old, and left the pen behind because of external circumstances (Napoleonic wars) and mismanagement with high debts.
