The synagogue in Gommersheim was established in 1826 at Hauptstrasse 58 in Gommersheim. It was sold to a private citizen in 1937 and demolished in 1966.
synagogue
There was a prayer room in Gommersheim as early as 1815. In 1826 the Jewish community acquired a two-story half-timbered building from the 18th century and set up the synagogue in it. The building had a female gallery that was accessible from the outside via a staircase. The ceiling was painted blue and decorated with stars. In 1921 the synagogue was extensively renovated and repaired. From 1930 onwards, no more services were held in the synagogue, as the minyan required to carry it out could no longer be obtained. The building had already become dilapidated in 1932. The women's gallery threatened to collapse and had to be propped up. In 1937 the synagogue was sold to a private person. Due to this fact, the building remained unmolested during the November pogroms in 1938 . In 1966 the former synagogue and the neighboring building that housed the mikveh were torn down.
Jewish community of Gommersheim
Jews lived in Gommersheim as early as the 17th century. The number of members of the Jewish community increased until the middle of the 19th century, when it fell sharply due to emigration. In 1932 the Jewish community was dissolved and incorporated into the Geinsheim (Neustadt) Jewish community . In addition to the synagogue, the community had a mikveh and a school. The dead were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Essingen . In October 1940 the last remaining Jewish residents were deported to the French internment camp Gurs as part of the so-called Wagner-Bürckel campaign .
