synagogue

The synagogue in Herxheim near Landau / Pfalz , a local community in the Südliche Weinstrasse district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1841/42. The synagogue was at 18 Obere Hauptstrasse.

History and description

The well-known architect August von Voit (1801–1870) was commissioned to plan the synagogue . He designed a Jewish community center for Herxheim, with the teacher's apartment and the Jewish school, the synagogue, set back behind two five-meter-wide single-storey houses. The main room of the synagogue was 15 by 10 m. The women's gallery was accessible from the vestibule .

At the end of the 19th century, the synagogue's furnishings were partially renewed. In 1923/24 the two front buildings were connected to one another, added floors and converted into a residential building.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was desecrated by the National Socialists and the interior was completely destroyed. A little later, Mayor Knecht ordered the synagogue to be demolished. The demolition costs were paid when the municipality bought the property.

Commemoration

Since 1988 there has been a memorial plaque at the location of the synagogue together with a found ornamental stone from the Almemor or Torah shrine .
