Böchingen synagogue

The synagogue in Böchingen was built in 1828 at Hauptstrasse 29. The synagogue was devastated during the November pogroms in 1938 . In 1951 the building was demolished.

synagogue

A synagogue in Böchingen was named as early as 1815. In 1827 the building was in such a desolate condition that it could no longer be used. In 1828 the building was demolished and a new synagogue was built on the property. It consisted of a residential building in front of it and the synagogue building in the back of the building. The prayer room was set up above the associated stable. In 1855/56 there was a major renovation. The house in the front area was demolished and replaced by a religious school with a teacher's apartment. In addition, an additional residential building was built on the site. The synagogue now had a floor area of 140 square meters and had 70 seats for men and 50 seats for women. During the November pogroms in 1938, the synagogue was devastated by members of the SA . Because of the narrow development, the synagogue was not set on fire, as the flames were feared to spread to neighboring buildings. The building then became the property of the municipality of Böchingen. In 1950, in the course of restitution proceedings , it came into the possession of the Rhenish Palatinate Jewish Community. In 1951 the ruin was torn down. In 1976, a memorial plaque was placed at the place where the synagogue was located. The inscription reads:

The synagogue, built in 1827 and
the prayer house of the Böchingen Jewish Community , stood on this property .
The synagogue was destroyed by the National Socialists during the Reichspogromnacht in 1938 and the ruins were torn down in 1951.
The residential building that still exists today was built by the religious community in 1856
and served as a Jewish school until the 1930s.
