history

The old part of the Jewish cemetery in Essingen was laid out in 1618 according to an inscription at the entrance to the cemetery. The cemetery was expanded several times until the 19th century and in 1761 it was also partially filled so that more graves could be created. The cemetery was an association cemetery where around 30 surrounding Jewish communities buried their dead. In the 19th century, many Jewish communities were able to set up their own cemeteries and therefore left the cemetery association. The following Jewish communities buried their dead in Essingen in the 19th century: Altdorf , Arzheim , Böbingen , Böchingen , Burrweiler , Diedesfeld , Edenkoben , Edesheim , Freimersheim , Gommersheim , Kirrweiler , Maikammer and Venningen .

When the old part of the cemetery was completely occupied in 1869, a new cemetery was laid on the other, north side of the street. The old part of the cemetery has an area of 85.87 ares and today there are still about 1700 tombstones ( mazewot ). The oldest tombstone is from 1647. The new part of the cemetery has an area of 24.28 ares and 263 tombstones are still there. The last burial was in 1939.
