The synagogue in Venningen , a local community in the Südliche Weinstrasse district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was set up in a former inn in 1847. The secular synagogue at Schafstraße 15 is a protected cultural monument .

history

The building that previously housed an inn was converted into a Jewish community center. The teacher's apartment was set up on the ground floor, while the synagogue room and a classroom were installed on the upper floor, the former dance hall . The women's area of the synagogue was separated by a curtain.

During the renovation in 1868, the flat ceiling of the former dance hall was replaced by a vaulted ceiling . In the synagogue there were 70 places for men and 50 for women.

The synagogue was devastated during the November pogrom in 1938 . Due to the narrow buildings, it was not set on fire. From 1942 to 1945 prisoners of war were housed in the building.

The building has been used as a residential building since the 1950s. During the renovation before 1988, the vaulted ceiling was removed.

The portal inscription from Deuteronomy 28: 6 reminds us of its use as a synagogue: “You are blessed when you arrive and blessed when you go”.

Commemoration

In 1990 a memorial plaque was placed at the entrance . The inscription reads: "The Jewish synagogue of Venningen was located in this building from 1847-1940 in 1990".
