The synagogue in Albersweiler , a local community in the Südliche Weinstrasse district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was a synagogue that was inaugurated in 1868 and set on fire during the November pogroms in 1938 .

history

The Jewish community of Albersweiler acquired two pieces of land in 1864 in order to build a new synagogue on them. The donation of a large sum of money from Süßkind Weil, who had emigrated from Albersweiler to the USA , made the construction of the new synagogue possible. The old synagogue was demolished in 1877 and the Jewish elementary school was built on the property .

From 1865 to 1867 the building was built in an oriental style . The Ingenheim synagogue , which was built according to Friedrich von Gärtner's plans, served as a model . The inauguration of the synagogue took place on January 17th and 19th, 1868.

The synagogue was sold to the community on October 21, 1938, but the purchase was not approved by the Bergzabern District Office. The synagogue was destroyed during the November pogrom in 1938 and demolished shortly afterwards. A warehouse of the Raiffeisen cooperative was built on the property in 1959 . A memorial plaque has been on the synagogue square since 1988.

architecture

The two-storey plastered building with sandstone structure had a three-part entrance risalit that stood out strongly. This consisted of two rectangular tower-like structures with coupled horseshoe arched windows and above each one an ox eye . In between was the double-winged portal , which was flanked by two columns with capitals on which a horseshoe arch decorated with eight-pointed stars rested, which framed the round window above the portal. Above this sandstone horseshoe arch were the tablets of the law , which were decorated by an acroter . On the tower-like components also acroteria were on a circulating palmettos fries . The entire facade was structured by pilaster strips and simple or coupled windows in the shape of a horseshoe arch gave the interior plenty of daylight. Inside there was a women's gallery and stylish chandeliers .

The synagogue was a very successful and representative ritual building, which was a great achievement for the small Jewish community .
