The Benedictine monastery of Châtillon-sur-Loing was a monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of the Holy Sacrament in Châtillon-Coligny ( Archdiocese of Sens ) in France from 1688 to 1792 .

history

Elisabeth Angélique de Montmorency , Duchess of Châtillon and Mecklenburg-Schwerin, established a women's convent in Châtillon-sur-Loing (today: Châtillon-Coligny) south of Montargis in Gâtinais from 1675 in order to set a religious counterweight to the Huguenots there . She turned to Mechtilde de Bar , the founder of the Benedictine Sisters of the Holy Sacrament, but it took another thirteen years before the monastery was able to take up prayer life with a school for girls in a school building previously used by the Huguenots. The first nuns came from the Paris Monastery of the Most Holy Sacrament on Rue Cassette . Charles-Nicolas Taffoureau de Fontaine (1655–1713), who in 1798 became Bishop of Alet , was the first spiritual supervisor . He was followed by his nephew, the scholar Charles-Henri Fenel (1665–1727).

The monastery ( priory ) had 26 cells, only a few of which were empty at the beginning. Until the dissolution by the French Revolution in 1792 a total of 75 nuns were known by name. In 1775 there was a fire with partial destruction, followed by a crisis in the Convention, which was resolved according to the scapegoat principle by driving out the strongest personality. After the dissolution on September 18, 1792 at least 12 nuns remained privately in Châtillon; the last (born 1750) died there in 1838. The building was demolished in 1902. It stood on the site of today's town hall of Châtillon-Coligny.
