Bengt Westerlund
Bengt E. Westerlund (born January 17, 1921 in Gävle , † June 4, 2008 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish astronomer who is particularly known for his studies of the Magellanic Clouds .
Westerlund was Professor of Astronomy at Uppsala University from 1975 to 1987 . The open star cluster Westerlund 1 , which is named after him, turned out to be one of the richest young clusters in the Milky Way . The asteroid (2902) Westerlund was named after him on the occasion of his retirement . In 2004 he inaugurated the Westerlund telescope in Uppsala that bears his name.
